Morgan Mikulin pitched a four-hitter and helped her cause with an RBI double to lead Sam Houston State to a 6-1 victory over Monmouth University of New Jersey in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Bearkats won the second game of the doubleheader 2-1. First baseman Amy Brown provided the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single.

Mikulin struck out seven batters in seven innings of work in the first game, also going 2-for-3 at the plate. In the second contest, she earned another victory in the circle, pitching the final inning and a third in relief of starter Tomi Garrison

Shelbi Tucker started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning of the first game with a three-run home run to put the Kats up 4-1.

Sam Houston (6-14) added two more runs in the fifth inning on Mikulin's RBI double and an RBI bunt single by Tucker. The freshman third baseman ended the contest going 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Hailey Wiginton's single in the fourth inning of the nightcap accounted for the first run of the contest after Monmouth scored a single run in the top of the first.

Monmouth dropped to 1-7 for the season with the loss.

Sam Houston State will return to Southland Conference action Saturday when the Bearkats play host to UTSA at 1 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
