Game Story: Football Clinches Southland Title (11/19)

HUNTSVILLE - Nobody had come close to the Sam Houston State Bearkats for the first 10 weeks of the 2016 season, but it still came down to a meeting with Central Arkansas in the final week of the regular season for the Kats to come away with the league crown.

The Bearkats entered the weekend as the No. 1 ranked team in the country while UCA came in at No. 11. Each team was 8-0 in Southland play coming into a game that pitted the nation's top offense against a UCA defense which was tops in the league and among the top in the country.

Despite UCA coming in having won eight games in a row, it was Sam Houston who came out swinging, putting the game away early. The Kats took advantage of three UCA fumbles in the first quarter and scored the first 17 points of the game on touchdown passes from Jeremiah Briscoe to seniors Parker Murry and Collin Rison and never looked back, building up a 38-7 lead at the half.

The Kats would go on to rack up 500 yards on the Bears in its 59-23 win, clinching the program's seventh league title and securing what would be a national seed in the FCS playoffs. Briscoe capped off his record-setting regular season by throwing seven touchdowns for the second time on the year. Four of those scores would go to junior classmate Yedidiah Louis, while the defense got to UCA quarterback Hayden Hildebrand for four sacks and a pair of interceptions.
