Game Story: Briscoe Sets Record As Kats Blast ‘Jacks In Battle of the Piney Woods (10/1)

HOUSTON – If there was a coming out party for Jeremiah Briscoe and the Bearkat offense in 2016, NRG Stadium and the Battle of the Piney Woods provided the perfect backdrop.

Sam Houston had breezed to a 3-0 record and a No. 2 national ranking to open the season, averaging 51.7 points per game in those wins. But rival Stephen F. Austin was entering the rivalry's 91st edition with a 3-1 record that included a win at No. 13 McNeese.

But as was the case in most of the Bearkats' games in 2016, Sam Houston's sixth straight win in the rivalry was decided before the halftime whistle sounded.

Sam Houston stalled out on its first two drives of the game, but then kicked it into high gear, scoring on their next six possessions, building a 42-7 lead at the midway point on its way toa convincing 63-28 win. The Kats racked up 402 yards in the opening half, while the defense picked up five sacks and allowed just three SFA first downs on the Lumberjacks' first seven drives of the game.

In the process, Briscoe had a field day against the SFA defense. The Sam Houston signal caller played in just three quarters of the game, but completed 25 of his 33 pass attempts for 438 yards and seven scores. The seven touchdowns set a new Sam Houston single-game record, surpassing the previous record of five. He would equal that feat in the regular-season finale with seven scores against Central Arkansas.

The day also served as a breakout game for freshman wide receiver Nathan Stewart who caught five passes for 183 yards and two scores, including a 73-yard score late in the first quarter that upped the lead to 28-0.
