Feature Story: Elite Scorers Keep Focus On SLC Crown (2/14)

HUNTSVILLE – Reaching 1,000 points in a college basketball career is a noteworthy feat for any player. But having three players reach the feat in the same season, well, that's a rarity.

The Bearkat men's basketball team pulled that out of their hat in 2016-17 with a trio of four-year players – Dakarai Henderson, Aurimas Majauskas and Paul Baxter – all reaching the millennium scoring mark as seniors.

Baxter was the first to join the program in the 2012-13 season, while Henderson and Majauskas came on a year later. However, it was Henderson who would reach his milestone first, doing so in just the third game of the year when he pumped in 14 points in a home win on Nov. 17 over Southern.

The leading scorer for Sam Houston each of his last two years, Henderson would finish up his Bearkat career with 1,325 points, which is 10th all-time in program history. Henderson would add another record to his ledger later in the year when he became Sam Houston's all-time leader in made 3-point field goals, demolishing the old record with 238 long balls for his tenure.

Majauskas would be the next to reach the feat when he went for 18 points in a win over Randall on Dec. 19. The Lithuanian big man who was an all-Southland Conference selection for the second straight year, would close out his career with 1,170 points, 14th all-time at Sam Houston.

Finally there was Baxter. Not known primarily for his scoring prowess, he needed 15 points to reach the mark going into a Jan. 14 game at Northwestern State. He connected on a pair of 3-point baskets on his way to 13 points in the first half and then reached the mark with a driving layup early in the second half on his way to a career-high 23 points in the win over the Demons.
