The more than 350 student-athletes who represent Sam Houston State on the playing field and in the arena gathered at Don Sanders Stadium for the annual SHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee All-Sports Picnic Monday.

Student-athletes enjoyed barbeque and chicken, then stepped on to the field to try their hand at various sports including volleyball, tennis, flag football, softball and soccer.

There also was a frisbee contest and an alcohol awareness "google" experience to demonstrate the effects of alcohol abuse.

"It was a great event," Sam Houston associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson said. "The picnic each year is an opportunity for all the players from each of our 17 sports teams to mix, mingle and get to know each other.

"One of the great things about Sam Houston State is the way all the sports teams support each other."
