FRISCO - Bearkat catcher Jordan Cannon was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday morning in an announcement by league officials, following a week where he led Sam Houston to three road victories.

It is the first such honor of Cannon's career and the second time that a Bearkat has taken a weekly honor from the SLC. Sophomore pitcher Hayden Wesneski was also named the league's pitcher of the week after the opening weekend of the season.

Cannon played a big role in the Bearkats’ 3-1 road record last week, including the team’s fourth consecutive league series win to stay atop the Southland standings. He drove in nine runs in the four games while catching every inning of every game, including 16 innings over the course of two games on Sunday at Nicholls.

After going hitless in his first three at-bats on Tuesday at Rice, Cannon connected on a game-tying three-run homer in the eighth before driving in two more runs on a double in the ninth, capping a career-best five-RBI night in the 14-9 comeback win over the Owls. He then had a hit and scored a run in the series opener versus Nicholls on Frirday night. In game two, he hit safely twice and drove in three runs before hitting his sixth homer of the season in the series finale on Sunday.

He currently ranks third in the Southland Conference with a .593 slugging percentage for the season and is second with six home runs, trailing teammate Blake Chisolm in both categories. Cannon's 24 RBI this season also ranks 11th in the league with 13 of those RBI coming in conference games.

Cannon and the Bearkats currently hold a 23-8 recorord and 11-1 mark in league play after last week's action. They are set to host Baylor on Tuesday night at The Don before hitting the road for a midweek game at UT Arlington on Wednesday. The Kats will then play host to Piney Woods rival Stephen F. Austin this weekend when they host the Lumberjacks for three games starting on Friday.
