Former Sam Houston State basketball star Gilberto Clavell will continue his career overseas after signing with Hapoel Migdal Haemek in the Israel-National League.

Clavell was the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2011 and was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year in 2010. He was a member of the all-conference team both seasons at SHSU.

His 2010 Bearkats were the Southland regular season and tournament champions and played Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in New Orleans, La.

The Puerto Rico native is the only junior college transfer to score 1,000 points or more in two years as a Bearkat.

Clavell played in the summer at Caciques de Humacao in the Puerto Rican BSN league. Last season he played at Kouvot (Korisliiga) in the Finnish league. In 44 games he was the fifth best scorer with an impressive 20 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. It was a very successful season in his career as he was selected to All-Finnish Korisliiga second team.

Among other achievements Clavell's team won the Southland Conference West Division for two years in a row (2010 and 2011).

Clavell represented Puerto Rico at the Under-19 World Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia six years ago. He averaged 12 points and 4.6 rebounds, while shooting 53% from the field and 59% from the free-throw line.
