EDINBURG, Texas -- Sam Houston State women’s basketball could not overcome an early deficit, falling to UTRGV 78-50 in the final game of the Feast On The Border on Saturday night.
It was the second time in six days the Bearkats (0-6) dropped a contest to UTRGV (4-2) after their 69-45 loss at home Monday.
Senior center Jasmine McCants and freshman guard Jennifer Oramas put up season-highs in points to lead the Bearkats, combining for 33 points. McCants led all scorers with 18 points while Oramas added 15, resetting her season-high after posting 11 against Marshall on Friday.
The Bearkats outscored UTRGV 32-31 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit. Sam Houston trailed 29-8 after the first quarter, and UTRGV was able to extend the lead to 29 points after the first half, 47-18.
McCants finished the game with the Kats’ last six points. She shot 54.5 percent from the field, which was above the team’s 32.1 field goal percentage.
Sam Houston’s lone lead of the game came in the first quarter when freshman post Kiera McKinney hit a jumper with 6:46 left in the period. It would only last 14 seconds when UTRGV’s Tristan Murphy answered with a lay-up. UTRGV would never relinquish its advantage.
McCants led all rebounders with eight rebounds as the Bearkats outrebounded their opponent 49-39. McKinney finished with six boards, and freshman guard Tia Harston had five.
Sam Houston struggled from the charity stripe, shooting 46.4 percent from the free throw line. The Bearkats weren’t able to contain a UTRGV squad that shot 45.5 percent from behind the arc.
The Kats will continue to search for their first win as they travel to Houston on Tuesday to face Rice. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
