HOUSTON – Sam Houston State split doubleheader action on the second day of the Houston Plaza Classic on Saturday.

After falling to Princeton, 9-4 in the first game, the Bearkats came back strong against ULM with a 6-3 win at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Game 1 – Box Score
Princeton 9, Sam Houston 5

Princeton started the scoring in the top of 2nd with three runs but the Bearkats would battle back and even the score at three behind a Megan McDonald homer to center field. Princeton scored two runs in the third, one run in sixth, and another three run seventh inning. Sam Houston scored runs in the fifth and seventh but wasn’t enough for the win.

KEY INNINGS
Top 2nd
Princeton got on the board in the second, taking a 3-0 advantage as Mikayla Blaska and Marissa Reynolds reached with one out. Then, Haley Hineman fought off a 0-2 pitch, singling to third base, bring home the first run. Colon was successful in reaching on a fielder’s choice, plating Danielle Dockx on an error. Hitting at the top of the order, Megan Donahey followed with a single to right field for a three-run frame.

Bottom 2nd
Sam Houston led off the second with back-to-back singles as Ashley Goetz shot a single through the left side and Katie Andrie laid down a bunt single. That set the stage for McDonald, who launched a three-run home run, knotting the game at 3-3. Princeton 3, SHSU 3

Top 3rd
Princeton responded as Grant used a one-out single to center field. Blaska followed with a ground out to first, moving Pierce to third. Reynolds provided the final damage of the frame, tripling home Pierce, before coming home on an error. Princeton 5, SHSU 3

Bottom 5th
The Kats trimmed the league to one as Koerselman started the inning with a single to the left and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Megan Crosby. Kaitlynn Dawson added a single up the middle as Koerselman took third. Then, Codi Carpenter drove home Koerselman on a sacrifice fly. Princeton 5, SHSU 4

Top 6th
Princeton responded in the following frame Reynolds belted a solo home run. Princeton 6, SHSU 4

Top 7th
Princeton tacked on three more runs courtesy of four hits, beginning with a leadoff single from Donahey through the right side. Donahey belted a two-run home run, providing Princeton a cushion. Reynold tacked on the final run of the frame, taking a single through the right side. Princeton 9, SHSU 4

Bottom 7th
Sam Houston attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh, cutting into the lead on a Hannah Marino pinch-hit home run to lead off the frame. Goetz added a double, advancing Dawson (walk) to third but consecutive fly outs would strand a pair in the loss. Princeton 9, SHSU 5

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Ashley Goetz finished the game tallying three hits in four plate appearances. Megan McDonald finished as one of three Kats with an RBI while Megan McDonald went 1-of-3 with a team-leading 2 RBIs.

Game 2- Box Score
Sam Houston 6, ULM 3

The Bearkats came out ready to take on ULM in the second game of the doubleheader, rebounding from their previous loss to Princeton.

Sam Houston posted eight hits including a pair from Megan McDonald who added one of five RBIs while reaching base three times.  Lindsey McLeod struck out five in six innings, scattering five hits while permitting three runs while fanning five without allowing a walk.

Tayler Atkinson picked up her second save, pitching the final frame, allowing just one hit.

KEY INNINGS
Top 1st
The Kats wasted little time, jumping ahead 1-0 in the first. Koerselman led off with a six-pitch walk and scored on a fielding error as McDonald singled one hitter later and advanced to second. Sam Houston stranded two. SHSU 1, ULM 0

Top 3rd
Tori Koerselman reached as the leadoff hitter for the second time in three innings, singling through the right side. Megan McDonald followed with a single to left and Carpenter added an RBI groundout. An infield single from Ashley Goetz pushed across the third run.  SHSU 3, ULM 0

Top 4th
The Bearkats tacked on three runs in the fourth, taking advantage of a hit and ULM error. Koerselman drew a four-pitch, RBI walk. ULM headed to the bullpen but the result was the same as McDonald drew a full-count free pass to plate the second. Hannah Marino provided the final damage, singling to the third base for a six-run advantage. SHSU 6, ULM 0

Bottom 6th
ULM got on the board in the sixth, using a leadoff double from Coyne. She came home to score on the long ball as Watt deposited a two-run home run to right field, pulling the Warhawks within four.

Bottom 7th
The Warhawks’ comeback was short lived but the squad pushed across a run in the final frame. A pair of singles leading off the inning forced the Kats to make a pitching change. Another single from Coyne put home one but a pair of groundouts sealed the Sam Houston win.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Megan McDonald registered two hits and added an RBI to lead the way. Seven different Bearkats recorded base hits with RBIs coming from Koerselman, McDonald, Marino, Carpenter and Goetz. Atkinson posted her second save.
