NACOGDOCHES – The Sam Houston women’s tennis picked up its first Southland Conference victory of the 2018 campaign, defeating Stephen F. Austin 5-2 Sunday afternoon.

The win marks the second year in a row for the Bearkats to topple the Lumberjacks after stopping SFA’s six-year winning streak last season. The SHSU women now stand 6-2 for the season and 1-1 in league action. The Kats dropped their Southland opener at Northwestern State 4-3 Friday.

“Coming off Friday’s tough loss at Northwestern State, we challenged the players to come out strong today. We jumped out in front quickly and earned the doubles point which is always big,” head coach Robb Hubbard said. “It was a good win but we still have lots of areas we need to work on if we’re going to compete in this year’s conference race.”

Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic paired to defeat Nida Kamal and Darinka Tiboldi 6-4 in the number one doubles. The two seniors opened play by winning the first four games in succession.
Roos Gerritsen and Sahaja Lamalapalli posted a 6-3 win over Vera Carvalho and Kaja Liubic after jumping out to a 5-2 lead to earn the doubles point.

Casey produced the Bearkats first point in singles with a 6-2 6-2 result versus Aremlle Cerdan. Lamalapalli picked up the third point by defeating Darinki Tiboldi 6-3 6-4 at number three.
Senior Fabienne Gettwart earned the match-clinching with by knocking off Gabi Guilarte 6-0 4-6 6-3. Senior Khee Yen Wee topped Stan Payne 6-4 3-6 1-0 (10-7) for the fifth Bearkat win at number three.

Sam Houston returns home Sunday to play host to Abilene Christian University at the McAdams Tennis Center.
