For our From the Vault feature, we are going to have daily features heading into this week’s Battle of the Piney Woods game as we take a look at some key moments in the history of the rivalry, which the Kats currently hold a seven game win streak over the Lumberjacks.

Some of the games in the 92 years of the rivalry are known by a singular name or event tied to that game. The Yohance Bree game or the Brawl game. The 2011 Battle of the Piney Woods is known as The Flanders Flip.

The eight-yard touchdown by Sam Houston running back Tim Flanders in the third quarter of the Bearkats' 45-10 victory over Stephen F. Austin at Reliant Stadium became a national sensation.

The TD was featured nationally as "Play of the Day No. 5" on ESPN and during the week following the game received more than 100,000 hits on

The was also nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year.

In the 86th "Battle of the Piney Woods", Flanders took the handoff in the third quarter and found a seam down the right sideline. When Flanders turned the corner, he faced an SFA defender before the goal line but that didn't stop him. He leaped head first and the impact of the defenders hit flipped Flanders head over heels into the end zone for the score.

"When Tim came off the field, I told next time he needs to land on his feet and stick the landing," head coach Willie Fritz said. "Really it was an incredible play. Tim is such a talented athlete and has such great balance, nothing he does surprises me."

That play has become the most iconic of all the previous 92 matchups in the historic rivalry.

This year's game will kickoff at 1 p.m. on Saturday. To purchase tickets visit
