FORT WORTH – Jaylonn Walker knocked down a career-high 25 points but it wasn’t enough as the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team (5-5) dropped a 72-59 decision at TCU, Thursday night at Schollmaier Arena.

Walker hit a career-high nine field goals and five treys. Lydia Baxter was the other Bearkat to reach double-digits, bringing in 11 points for the Kats. TCU’s Kianna Ray led the Horned Frogs with 21 points.

A Kiera McKinney jumper in the short corner helped Sam Houston strike first but the Horned Frogs put together a 10-0 run to take an early 10-2 lead. Courtney Cook broke up the momentum with a free throw and Walker was able to tack on five more points in the remainder of the opening quarter.

Sam Houston turned the corner to start the second as Jennifer Oramas and Walker drilled back-to-back three-pointers. TCU responded with seven consecutive points before Dominique Maxwell broke up the run with a fast-break layup.

Walker got hot beyond the three-point arc and sunk her third and fourth three-pointers of the game to bring Sam Houston within four points of TCU. However, the Kats were held at arm's length and trailed, 34-26, going into halftime.

Walker finished the first half with 14 of Sam Houston’s 26 points while Ray was responsible for 18 points for the hosting Horned Frogs.

The Kats were silent coming out of the break as TCU went on an 8-0 run to start the third quarter. However, Cook drilled a jumper at the 5:47 mark to break up the Horned Frog’s momentum and make it a 42-28 game.

The teams swapped buckets before Walker spearheaded a 7-0, Sam Houston run to pull the Kats within 10 points at 47-37.

Baxter and Walker answered two TCU field goals with four perfect trips to the free-throw line. The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first four minutes of the final quarter before Maxwell netted two consecutive layups to cut into TCU’s lead, 62-49, with 4:42 remaining.

Walker netted her ninth field goal of the night with 53 seconds remaining, but Sam Houston couldn’t make up ground and fell to the Horned Frogs, 72-59. With the loss, the Kats fall to 5-5 on the season.
