Full Release From Southland Conference
FRISCO – Sam Houston State senior Adrian Contreras and sophomore Zyon McCollum were both named to the Southland Conference All-Academic teams, according to an announcement on Tuesday from league officials.
Both Bearkats were automatic selections to the 24-member team, one which Abilene Christian led with five selections, including SLC Student-Athlete of the Year Luke Anthony.
Contreras earned his automatic selection by virtue of being named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District team earlier this year. He was also a finalist for the 2018 STATS FCS Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award, one of 13 players from across all of FCS to earn nomination for the honor.
He served as a captain for each for the past three seasons, twice earning honorable mention all-Southland Conference nods while starting 42 games over his four-year career and leading SHSU to the FCS playoffs three times.
Contreras graduated with a bachelors in BBA/Accounting in the spring of 2018 and is scheduled to complete his master’s degree in accounting in the spring of 2019.
Meanwhile, McCollum earned his automatic selection after earning first team all-SLC honors as a cornerback in 2018. The Galveston native, a biomedical sciences major, was a preseason all-league selection and lived up to the billing as a sophomore.
He finished the season with three interceptions and eight pass breakups for a Bearkat defense that allowed just 219.5 passing yards per game, a mark that was the best in the SLC. He also finished with 44 tackles, including 1.5 TFL, and turned in his best game of the year in the season finale when he picked off a pair of passes, including one returned for a touchdown. He also forced a fumble in the victory over the Huskies.
