COLLEGE STATION –
The Sam Houston State Bearkat track and field team kicked off the 2019 indoor season with a bang on Friday as both men and women had top performers in several events at the Ted Nelson Invitational.

Senior sprinter Chris Jefferson and freshman Jo’Vaughn Martin turned in two of the top performances for the Kats. Both men finished in the first and second spots respectively in the 200-meter event with their times being separated by a mere .01 seconds with each time good enough to set a new school record for the event.

Jefferson would take the top spot in the event with a time of 20.85 seconds, and added to his day by winning the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.71 seconds. Meanwhile, Martin was right there in the 200 with a time of 20.86. Those times are the top two times in the NCAA in the 200-meters.

It was a day to set records as another Bearkat, Fabian McCall, set a school record of his own in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.74. Not only would the junior set the school record but he is ranked second in the NCAA and has already qualified for nationals in the event.

Other notable performances by the men on Friday included Jordan Leon who finished fourth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:40.06, while Aaron Akens took first place in the weight throw with a throw of 18.07m. In all the Kats would finish first as a team out of 16 schools as a team at the event.

On the women’s side, they showed well also, finishing third in the 17-team field. Junior Baylee Lara finished first in the 60-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 8.61. Payton Wells ALSO turned in a time of 56.75 in the 400-meter dash which was good for second place in the event.

The women would place second in the 4x400-Meter Relay and the men would finish first in the same event. The women would turn in a time of 3:50.57 while the men would turn in a time of 3:15.87.

The Bearkats will compete again in just over a week when they will have athletes compete in the Fast Track Invitational & Multi in Houston. The events will begin on Saturday Jan 19 and run through Sunday.
