HOUSTON - The Sam Houston State Bearkats wrapped up another meet in Houston as they competed in the Houston Invitational and Multi at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday.
Senior Ashton Summers competed and placed second in the long jump with a jump of 6.94m. Summers was not the only athlete to place highly in field events. Freshman Steven Gruss competed in the high jump and placed fifth. Although Gruss is just starting his Bearkat career, his jump of 2.00m in this weekend’s high jump is his best mark through the first three events of the season.
Another top-five finisher for his field event was Aaron Akens. The senior competed in the shot-put event and surpassed his throw from the first meet of the season with a 15.45m throw during this weekend’s competition.
In the pole vault event sophomore Clayton Fritsch once again finished in the top two. A week after finishing first overall and two weeks removed from a second-place finish, Fritsch finished second with a jump of 5.05m.
Fabian McCall placed second in the 60-meter hurdle but finished with a better time (7.88) than he did during SHSU’s FasTrak Invitational meet (7.93).
Sprinters Jo’vaugn Martin and Chris Jefferson competed in the 60-meter dash and finished with times of 6.73 and 6.75 respectively.
For the women’s side, junior Baylee Lara competed in the Pentathlon and collected a total of 3,723 points which good for second overall. Meanwhile, senior Tristyn Allen placed second overall in the triple jump with a jump of 13.03m, but did so in record-setting fashion. The jump set a new SHSU indoor record and is the 16th-best leap in the country so far this year.
The 4x400-meter relay team took first place honors with a time of 3:51.63. The event runners were, senior Teylor Jones, senior Jamie Eckford, junior Teona Spivey and sophomore Jasmin Mitchell.
The Bearkats will head to Lubbock this week to compete in Texas Tech Open. The meet will begin on Friday Feb 1 and run through Saturday.
