HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats made it a 2-0 weekend to open up conference play on Saturday, taking four singles matches to walk away with a 4-3 win over New Orleans at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Coach Rob Hubbard’s team moved to 7-3 overall on the year with the win, but again had to do it comeback fashion after the Privateers (6-3) snagged the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3.
UNO followed with the first singles point as Lea Alguacil won at No. 6, but from there it was all Kats as they took each of the next four singles matches to secure the match.
Sahaja Yamalapalli was the first to get in the scoring column with her 6-0, 6-4 victory over Trang Dao on the top court, and Karla De La Luz Montalvo was right behind her, tying the match at -2 with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Claudette Gilhespie.
On the No. 5 court, Roos Gerritsen gave SHSU a 3-2 lead by outlasting Mar Gendra, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 and Isidora Zivkovic provided the clinching point with her 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over Ank Vullings.
The Kats will now go on the road for the first time in conference play, beginning Friday, March 8 when they go to Abilene Christian. They will then take the trip to San Antonio for a Sunday match at UIW.
