PROVO, Utah – Ashley Lewis delivered 14 kills, but it was not enough as Weber State handed Sam Houston State a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) defeat in the opening match of the BYU Doterra Classic at Smith Fieldhouse.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Kats (1-3) in the early portion of the season after opening up the year with a win over Prairie View one week ago. The Kats struggled offensively against the Wildcats (3-1) who finished with 13.0 total blocks and held SHSU to .124 hitting with 25 attack errors.
Meanwhile, Weber State hit .278 as a team and despite not finishing with a single player in double-figure kills, had four players finish with nine kills apiece.
Lewis just missed a double-double, connecting for 14 kills on 40 swings with nine digs; however, no other Bearkat finished with more than Samantha Rodgers’ eight scores. Madilyn Miles had 15 assists and Morgan Janda added 14, while Addison Miller led all players with 18 digs.
The Kats will face their toughest test of the weekend on Friday night when they take on the host BYU Cougars who are ranked No. 13 in the nation. The match is set for 8:00 p.m. CT and can be viewed on the WCC Network.
