SAN ANTONIO – The Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team swept their way to their seventh conference win on Saturday at the McDermott Center, winning 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 27-25) at Incarnate Word.
Ashley Lewis led the Bearkats (11-9, 7-1 SLC) with 16 kills on 39 swings, hitting .256 on the match. Addison Miller added 21 digs along with six assists and two aces.
The Kats came out swinging right away, showing no weaknesses through the first two sets. Sam Houston led in hitting percentage throughout the match over UIW, recording a whopping .341 and .257 in sets one and two.
UIW led in blocks with six, but SHSU was right behind them with five, with Kaira Hunnicutt leading the squad with three. Breanne Chausse added 12 kills herself on 27 swings, while Morgan Janda led the Kats in assists with 23.
Set three proved to be a bit more difficult, but with the help of kills from Lewis and Chausse, the Kats were able to close out the final set 27-25. Sam Houston will return to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Thursday, as they take on McNeese. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
