Tommy Chain is in his 13th season of work with the Bearkat women and serves as Associate Coach of Sam Houston State Women's golf team and Men’s Assistant Coach.  After 4 years of collegiate golf (1973-77) at University of St. Thomas, Tommy played Professional golf from 1977-1982 which included stints on the PGA Tour from 1979-1982.  On the PGA Tour, Coach Chain carded 2 top 25 finishes with a 24that the 1982 Anheuser-Busch Classic and career best t-20th at 1979 Hawaiian Open, his 1st PGA Tour event.  After playing, Coach Chain served as a golf professional at Mill Ridge Golf Club and became lead instructor for the U.S. Schools of Golf at Waterwood National from 2000-2006.  With more than 40 years of golf experience as a professional, player, and teacher, Coach Chain has helped to lead Bearkat Women to new heights.

 

In his 12 years at Sam Houston State University, Coach Chain has helped the Bearkat Women’s Team to the 2007 Southland Conference Championship, runner-up finishes in 2008, 2010, & 2013, 22- Tournament Titles, 25 – Individual Titles, 30- All-Southland Conference Selections, 2- Southland Conference Player of the Year awards, and 3- Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year Awards.

 

In the 2017-18 Season, helped to guide the Women to 1 win, Bearkat Women’s Invitational, and 7 top 3 Team finishes including 3rd at Southland Conference Championship.  The Bearkats recorded a Team Scoring Average -300, 2nd lowest in school history.  Also, helped guide individual victories of Hanna Alberto- 3 wins and a school record low 72.73 scoring average and Jenna Phillips- 1 win.  Hanna Alberto would take the Southland Conference Player of the Year Award, Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year and 1st Team All-Southland Conference while Jenna Phillips was named to 2nd Team All-Southland Conference Team.

 

During the 2016-17 Season, helped lead the women to SHSU Season Record of 5 Team wins (Hobble Creek Classic, Bearkat Invitational, Islander Classic, Vaquerro Invitational, & Huskie Intercollegiate) and SHSU Record Team Scoring Average – 300 for the year.  The Bearkats finished 3rd at Southland Conference Championship 4 shots back of eventual Winner.  Heather Shake carded 2 wins and Gianti Mahardhika claimed 1 victory and set the SHSU Women’s 54 Hole Scoring Record, 208 (-5).  Hanna Alberto was named 1st Team All-Southland Conference, Heather Shake to the 2nd Team All-Southland Conference and Gianti Mahardhika was names Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year.

 

In the 2015-16 Season, helped the Bearkats claim 2 team wins (ORU Bob Hurley Shootout, Texas State All-There Challenge) and 4th place finish at the Southland Conference Championship.  Led newcomer, Heather Shake to 2 wins and 1st Team All-Southland Conference Team and Newcomer of the year as well as Senior, Nicole Budnik to 1 win and 2nd Team All-Southland Conference. 

 

During the 2014-15 Season, the Bearkast claimed 1 regular season title (ORU Bob Hurley Shootout) and 3 Runner-up finishes for the Season along with a 5th at Southland Conference Championship. Paige Nelson, Alisa White, and Sarah Black each claimed their 1st individual victory during the season.  The trio claimed All-Southland Conference honors with Paige Nelson selected to 1st Team, Alisa White named to 2nd Team, and Sarah Black selected Honorable Mention.

 

In 2013-14, helped guide the Bearkats to 1 Regular Season win (Harold Funston Invite) and claimed 4th at Southland Conference Championship.  Alisa White was named 1st Team All-Southland Conference Championship and Newcomer of the Year.

 

In the 2012-13 Season, helped lead the Bearkat to 2 Team Wins (UALR Collegiate, Huskie Invitational) and 2 Team Runner-up finishes including 2nd at Southland Conference Championship.  Shelby Hardy claimed 3 victories and season-ending Southland Conference Championship by firing, SHSU School Record, 212 (-4) and was named Southland Conference Player of the Year, 1st Team All-Southland Conference and Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the year.  Nicole Budnik was named to 2nd Team All-Southland Conference.

 

During the 2011-12 Season, the Bearkats claimed 1 win (Harold Funston Invite) with 5 top 3 finishes including 2 Team Runner-up finishes.  The Women finished 4th at Southland Conference Championship and Shelby Hardy took home 2 individual wins and was named to 1st Team All-Southland Conference.

 

In the 2010-11 Season, led the Women to 2 victories (Harold Funston Invitational, Hal Sutton Invitational) and 5 top 3 finishes for the season with the Bearkats finishing 5th at Southland Conference Championships.  Jessica Borth and Shelby Hardy each took home individual victories and Landa Stewart claimed 2 wins.  Shelby Hardy was named to 1st Team All-Southland Conference.

 

During 2009-10 Season, helped to guide Women to 5 top 3 Team finishes including a Runner-up finish at Southland Conference Championship.  Shelby Hardy and Kirsten Spittler were named to 2nd Team All-Southland Conference and Meghann Stevens was named Newcomer of the Year. 

 

During the 2008-09 Season, helped guide Women to runner-up finish at Nicholls State and 6th place finish at Southland Conference Championship.  Wendy Joyner was named to 2nd Team All-Southland Conference

 

In the 2007-08 Season, The Bearkats were Southland Conference runners-up in 2008 in Beaumont and claimed 3 Regular season wins (North Texas Mean Green Inv., Nicholls State Inv., Texas State Claude Jacobs Intercollegiate).  Jennifer Heinz was Southland Conference women's golf "Student-Athlete of the Year" in 2008 and 1st Team All-Southland Conference to go with her 1 Tournament victory.  Wendy Joyner brought home her first Individual Title.

 

In 2007, led the Bearkats to its 2nd Southland Conference women's golf championship with a 308-300-304--912 total at Horseshoe Bay. Three Bearkat golfers finished among the league's top 10 with Stefanie Page winning the Southland medalist championship and Landa Stewart and Jennifer Heinz placing fifth and eighth, respectively.  The Women claimed 3 Regular Season wins (Islander Classic, SHSU Waterwood Invitational, Texas State Claude Jacobs Invite) and Stephanie Page won 2 individual titles including Southland Conference Championship and was named to 1st Team All-Southland Conference and Newcomer of the Year.  Jennifer Heinz was named to 2nd Team All-Southland Conference
