Jason Barfield serves as Sam Houston State assistant athletic director for media relations.
His duties include video board operations, video streaming, website video features and serves as the liaison for Bearkat radio and TV. He is the primary contact for women's bowling, men's basketball and women's basketball and coordinates student workers for media services.
Barfield was promoted to his current position on August 6, 2012, after serving five years as SHSU media coordinator.
Bearkat Sports Network (BSN), a subscription-based video service available on the athletic department's official Website, has blossomed from a pet project to an online force that, this year, celebrated its 300th live broadcast with the streaming of a baseball game between Sam Houston State and Texas A&M.
In addition to the live broadcasts, BSN also produces a wealth of on-demand content. This school year alone, more than 225 preproduced videos (interviews, press conferences, features) were posted to the Bearkats' Website and BSN's YouTube and Facebook pages.
Barfield joined the Bearkat athletic department in September, 2005, as operations coordinator. He has been responsible for facilities management and game day operations for Bowers Stadium, Don Sanders Stadium, the Bearkat softball complex and other athletic venues. He moved into the media services position in June, 2007.
Previously, he served as sports editor of the Huntsville Item where he was honored 13 times for state and regional writing and design awards. He formally was sports coordinator for the Baytown Sun. As a Sam Houston State student, he was sports director and sports anchor for the student station. Barfield received his Bachelor's degree in radio-television with a minor in journalism from Sam Houston in 2000. He is a graduate of Barbers Hill High School. He and wife Patty are the parents of a daughter, Kenna and a son, Avery
