Once again, Sam Houston’s student-athletes have raised the bar for performance in the classroom.

During the fall of 2013, the 359 student-athletes who play for the university’s 17 sports teams combined to produce an overall semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.04.

Even more impressive is the overall career grade point average for the athletic department which rose to a 3.06 mark.

Both figures are all-time highs.

The athletic department also saw a third academic record equaled with seven sports squads compiling team GPAs higher than 3.0 for the semester.

Bowling led all teams this fall with a 3.56 semester GPA. Other sports posting an above 3.0 mark included tennis (3.42), volleyball and soccer (both 3.36), men’s golf (3.31), women’s track and field (3.23) and softball (3.07).

The women’s tennis team owns the department’s highest overall GPA mark with a 3.51 average.

Thirty-three SHSU student-athletes compiled perfect 4.0 GPAs during the fall.

Ten Bearkats were voted to the Southland’s Academic All-Conference squads.

These performances highlight the SHSU Department of Athletics Fall 2014 Academic Report released this week by associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson and assistant athletic director for student services Jessica Payne.

"Never before have we had seven of our sports teams produced team grade point averages higher than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters,” Sam Houston director of athletics Bobby Williams said. "We are extremely proud of our student-athlete's achievements in the classroom and commend our coaching staff for the job they do in recruiting quality student-athletes. The number one goal for each of our sports teams is to have our young men and women earn the Sam Houston degrees."

Academic All-Southland selections were Tayler Gray and Deveney Wells-Gibson (volleyball); Ashley Fluty, Kyle Hambleton and Mariah Titus (soccer) and Brian Bell, Eric Fieilo, Timothy Flanders, Keshawn Hill and Torrance Williams (football).

The head coach, academic coordinator and sports information director from each Southland member votes on the Academic All-Southland team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 overall GPA or higher and be a starter or frontline reserve.

Cross country student-athletes are considered for Academic All-Southland in the spring with track and field.

Sam Houston athletics' success in the classroom is no flash in the pan. Each semester since the 1994-95 school year, SHSU student-athletes have combined to produce semester GPAs of 2.4 or higher. The Bearkat athletic GPA has 2.83 or higher for 15 consecutive semesters.

Bearkat student-athletes with perfect 4.0 fall GPAs included Zach Cabra (men’s golf); Evan Arambula, Oliver Dubiel, Patrick Pitts and Karl Schreiber (men’s track); Wyatt Powell (baseball), Lachlan Edwards and Joshua Reynolds (football); Kimi Davidson, Janine Kuwahara and Kelsey Smith (bowling); Maddie Mortimore and Kayla Stevenson (tennis), Lauren Bohlen, Cherise Colman, Tayler Gray and Carling Urben (volleyball); Madison Bible, Katelyn Bunch, Ashley Fluty, Kylie Hambleton, Tricia Mallory and Kaisa Marshall (soccer); Jessica Alvarez, Nicole Aponte, Haleigh Ceballos, Elizabeth Lyssy and Solenn Riou (women’s track); Alyssa Coggins, Alyssa Gregg, Amber Neal and Jessica Slater (softball) and Maggie Lorenz (women’s basketball).

Seventy-nine Sam Houston State student-athletes from Bearkat sports teams that completed their playing seasons during the fall semester earned spots of the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic honor roll.

Athletes from cross country, football, soccer and volleyball were recognized.

To earn a spot on the honor roll, an athlete must maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average or higher during the semester in which the student-athlete's sport competes. Sports included on the fall honor roll are football, volleyball, soccer and cross country.
