Associate Athletic Director External Relations
Alma Mater: Sam Houston State, 1991

Russell Martinez was named named the Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and Development for Sam Houston State University in December 2018. Martinez has served as the major gift officer for athletics for University Advancement’s development office since joining SHSU in 2014 and with accepting the Associate AD position, gained broader external responsibilities for the Athletics Department.

As a major gift officer, his duties have included managing major gifts, the annual fund and alumni programs for athletics. Martinez will now formally lead the external operations of the athletics department, including overseeing the staff responsible for corporate sales, ticketing, marketing, and development and game operations.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead the team responsible for promoting our athletic programs and student athletes to the public, our fans, and donors,” Martinez said. “We will use the resources and expertise of external operations and development to make a meaningful and positive impact for Bearkat athletics and the university.

“For me this is a dream job because it will allow me to use the skills and experience I have developed over my career in support of one of my greatest passions, which is collegiate athletics,” he said.

“I want to thank President Hoyt, Frank Holmes, Thelma Mooney and University Advancement for working with us on this,” said Director of Athletics Bobby Williams. “Russell has been a valued team member for the past several years and this formalizes what he's already been doing.”

Martinez will continue to serve as the major gift officer for athletics for University Advancement.

Prior to joining Sam Houston State in 2014, Martinez served as the Deputy District Director for U.S. Representative Kevin Brady. There, he assisted in the management of district office operations, supervised staff and office interns and maintained the Congressman’s district calendar.

From 1994-2013 Martinez worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the Information Technology Division, serving as Manager of Web Services his final six years there. He also worked as a systems analyst and a technical writer during his time with TDCJ.

Martinez is a 1991 graduate of Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology/Corrections. He received his Master of Professional Studies, Political Management in 2009 from George Washington University.
