The home for Bearkat tennis is the McAdams Tennis Complex. The facility, which consists of eight hard courts, is located on Avenue I in the heart of the Sam Houston State campus. Established by Kelly and the late Ina May McAdams of Austin and their daughter and son-in-law Billye and Dr. Herb Muecke of Huntsville, funds were donated in 1976 to provide a tennis facility for education and athletics. The original four-court facility was built in 1976 south of Pritchett Field on the current site of the Katy and E. Don Walker Jr. Education Center. These courts were used by the tennis team from 1976 to 1980. With the growth of the tennis program, more court space was needed. The current eight-court facility was built with lights, bleachers, fences, and expanded viewing area. A rededication ceremony recognizing the McAdams family and their contribution to Sam Houston State was held in 1986. Today the complex provides a home not only for Bearkat tennis but also for college instruction, area youth clinics, and major tournaments. The McAdams Complex twice has hosted the Southland Conference Tennis Championships (in 1989 and 1998). |
