With an 11-match winning streak in hand and leading the Southland Conference West Division with an 11-1 league record, the Sam Houston State volleyball team begins a four-game road swing to close out the 2009 regular season Thursday when the Bearkats travel to UT-Arlington for a 7 p.m. contest.

Following the UTA match, Sam Houston will play at Texas State, Central Arkansas and Northwestern State. The Bearkats already have clinched a berth in the Southland Conference post-season tournament in San Antonio Nov. 19-21. But the volleyball team is still looking to grab the number one seed at the tournament.

Central Arkansas leads the West Division with a 12-0 record. While the Bears cannot represent the Southland in NCAA post-season play, UCA still is eligible to win the regular season trophy since the tournament, not regular season play, decides the league's automatic berth. If Sam Houston can sweep its two matches this weekend, that could set up a showdown for the regular season trophy Nov. 12 in Conway.

"Right now, we're focusing on UT-Arlington. We've just got to take the matches one at a time," freshman setter Michelle Miller said.

Miller stepped into the role as Bearkat starting setter after Kym Loving's season was ended by a knee injury. With Miller as their setter, the volleyball team has won 15 of their last 20 matches. She ranks third in the Southland Conference in assists with 9.74 per set.

"Michelle has done a tremendous job running the floor for us," head coach Brenda Gray said. "To have a freshman step up like this is remarkable. But this whole team this year has been remarkable. It's a fun group to coach."

Miller has produced 896 assists in 92 sets for the Bearkats.

"Stepping in for an injured teammate isn't really the way I wanted to get to play, but the whole team has been so supportive," Miller said. "It's been a great experience and we're excited about the challenges ahead."

Sam Houston State closed out its home schedule with a five-set victory over A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday. The Bearkats were 14-2 on the Johnson Coliseum floor this season. Sam Houston is 4-4 on the road this year.

While volleyball has completed its home schedule, fans wishing ticket information for other Bearkat sports events can go on-line at www.gobearkats.com or contact the Sam Houston ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House at Bowers Stadium.
