Sam Houston head baseball coach David Pierce and his staff have announced their November signing period recruits.

The Bearkats signed seven right-handed pitchers; four of which are two-way players, a left-handed pitcher two-way player, a right-handed hitting outfielder and one additional infielder in Pierce's inaugural November signing class.

"This class is our first and we feel we have met many needs for the future of the Sam Houston State Baseball Program" Pierce said. "I am pleased and excited with all the new signees and believe they give us the foundation we were looking for to move forward."

"Recruiting coordinator  Sean Allen and assistant coach Philip Miller hit the ground running to put together a class that brings depth, talent and a competitive nature to the program. Sean and Philip worked diligently to put together a class that should give us an opportunity to compete at the level we are striving.

The Bearkat baseball signees are:

CORDELL CASTLEBERRY - OF/RHP - Kingwood
Perfect Game Preseason All-America selection and All-District for coach Kelly Mead at Kingwood ... led Kingwood to 2010 District 14-5A district title ... four sport letterman, also playing football, basketball and soccer ... play club baseball for Houston Heat - Black on National Under 17 championships semifinalist squad

Coach Pierce "Cordell can really spin the breaking ball. He has a strong frame, very competitive and may even hit some."

Coach Allen-"Cordell is a very athletic pitcher.  He is a mid to uppers 80's guy with a plus CB.  His frame is only going to allow him to keep getting better.  The breaking ball is special."

JORDAN CHURCH - RHP - Round Rock / Stony Point
All-District pitcher for coach Tom Collins at Stony Point ... led team to district championship ... played club baseball for Action Baseball ... also lettered in basketball

Coach Pierce - "Jordan is a 6'7" RHP with great upside as well. He has a lot of room for growth in his body frame. He throws the breaking ball well and is a strike thrower."

Coach Allen- "I really like Jordan's SL.  It is a true out pitch right now at 80-82mph.  Once his body develops he will have a chance to be special.  He pitches 84-87 topping at 90 right now with good down hill angle.  I think in 3 years Jordan will be a very good pro prospect.  He is very mature for his age and loves to work."

JUAN CORTINA - C/RHP - Humble / Atascocita
All-Greater Houston and All-District outfielder for coach Eric Matthews at Atascocita ... led squad to district championship ... hit .360 with 28 RBIs and produced 3.08 earned run average and 6-2 record on the mound as a junior ... played club baseball for Houston Kyle Chapman ... also runs track in high school

Coach Pierce- "Juan is an interesting two-way player. He catches and pitches. His fastball has been up to 92 mph and he is a very good catcher as well. Juan gives you options as a coach."

Coach Allen- "Juan is another two-way player with a good arm.  He does everything well, and has a chance to be a solid back end of the bullpen type of arm.  He was 88-92 with plus sink at the end of the summer."

ROMEO CORTINA - OF - Humble / Atascocita
All-Greater Houston and All-District outfielder for coach Eric Matthews at Atascocita ... led squad to district championship ... hit .412 with 22 RBIs as junior ... played club baseball for Houston Kyle Chapman ... also runs track in high school

Coach Pierce- "Romeo caught my eye all summer. He runs well and has a very good simple compact swing. He really knows how to get on base."

Coach Allen- Romeo can just flat out hit.  I think he will help with the power bat from the right side that we felt we needed in the outfield.  He runs and throws well and should be a middle of the order hitter for us throughout his career.

SETH HOLBERT - RHP - College Station / A&M Consolidated
All-State and All-District 12-5A pitcher for coach Chase Mann ... named team's "Pitcher of the Year" ... led team to district title and squad ranked as high as No. 2 in Texas Class 5A ... compiled 9-1 record and 1.10 earned run average as junior ... played for Team Texas in 2011 Junior Sun Belt Classic ... played club baseball for College Station Twelve and Waco Storm

Coach Pierce- "Seth has a chance to be a frontline pitcher very soon. He is competitive and has a very good arm. As he continues to get stronger and more durable he will be a pitcher that has a chance to really do well at the DI level."

Coach Allen-"Seth came on like crazy last spring for A&M Consolidated.  He is a very wiry body type that is very fast twitch.  A strike thrower with a plus Ch that sits upper 80's.  Seth will compete for a weekend spot for us early in his career."

MILES MANNING - SS/RHP - Victoria
All-District and All-Area pitcher on 21-9 district champions and area finalist team for coach Manuel Alvarado at Victoria ... hit .362 with 20 RBIs and posted 10-2 record on the mound as a junior ... played club baseball for Houston Banditos ... also lettered in cross country and basketball

Coach Pierce- "Miles may be the best athlete in the class. He plays SS, is working on becoming a switch hitter and is a very good right handed pitcher. Miles commands the ball and has the potential to throw a plus breaking ball. Miles shows great arm strength from the field and runs well"

Coach Allen-"Miles is a very toolsy player.  He flashes plus tools at you across the board at short stop.  He helps us get more athletic in the middle of the field and also has a shot to be a good back end of the bullpen type arm.  A very fast twitch athlete that is only going to get better as he keeps playing."

FORD MOORE - OF/LHP - College Station, A&M Consolidated
All-State, All-Brazos Valley and All-District pitcher and outfielder for coach Chase Mann at A&M Consolidated ... in 2011 hit .456 with on base average of .610 ... went 8-0 with 2.12 ERA on the mound ... led team to three district titles ... played club baseball for Brazos Valley Pride, Houston Heat and Brazos Valley Renegades ... 2010 USSSA Gold Medal Games Defensive Player of the Games

Coach Pierce- "Ford might be the best competitor in the class. He's not big in size, but he can really play the outfield and give opposing pitchers a fit with his pesky approach. He also can flat pitch. He features the best change up in this class."

Coach Allen- "Baseball Rat is what Ford is.  He plays hard, gets on base and is one of those kids that just finds ways to help the team win, whether it is as a hitter or pitcher Ford wins.  He is a plus defender and a pro-typical leadoff hitter."

DALTON PERRY - 3B - BRAZOSWOOD
One of the top hitters for Brazoswood High School's state championship team that rolled up 30-5 record ... outstanding hitter.

Coach Pierce- "Dalton is a winner. He is a former teammate of Brandon Bergen's. Dalton was an intricate part of the 2011 State Champion Brazoswood Bucs as a junior and can really hit."

Coach Allen- "Dalton can flat out hit.  He played great last year for Brazoswood in the playoff's.  I think he will walk in here and provide us with some power and a middle of the order type of bat from day one."

SPENCE RAHAM - 1B/RHP - Tomball
All-District first baseman for coach Douglas Rush at Tomball ... All-Tournament at Team Texas Sun Belt Classic ... hit .416 with 18 RBIs and posted 2.62 earned run average for bi-district finalist squad ... played club baseball for Houston Banditos ... also lettered in basketball

Coach Pierce - "Spence has a great upside. His arm really works, he throws the breaking ball well and has a chance to hit with power."

Coach Allen- "Spence is a very physical kid that should provide us with a power bat from the right side.  He also has a chance to help us on the mound, he understands how to win and he is just beginning to tap into his talent.  He has a very bright future both with the bat and on the mound."

JASON SIMMS - RHP - Blinn Junior College
Right-handed pitcher for the Blinn Buccaneers as a sophomore ... graduate of Liberty Christian High School

Coach Pierce- "Jason is our lone non freshman recruit. He comes to us from Blinn where he has really done well. Jason has a ton of experience and can really pitch."

Coach Allen- "The number one thing I like about Jason is he misses bats with his Fastball.  RHH's hit below .200 off him last year.  He has plus sink with a mid's 80's fastball and creates serious hitting problems with his angles and deception in his delivery.  Although he is a Junior College kid he still has a lot of room to get stronger and keep getting better.  He should walk in and eat up a lot of innings right away."
