Huntsville - Konner Tucker scored a season high 22 points to lead Sam Houston to an 82-63 non-conference men's basketball victory over Dallas Christian Tuesday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Demarcus Gatlin added 14 points and Marcus James and Aaron Harwell each scored 10 for the Bearkats as they ended a five-game losing streak. All those losses were on the road as the Kats stand 2-0 for the year in Johnson Coliseum.

Malcolm McCarty led the Crusaders with 25 points.

Sam Houston (2-5) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes and built a 21-point lead at halftime, 47-26, with 57.1 per cent shooting in the opening period (16-of-28).

Malcolm McCarty scored the first basket for Dallas Christian (3-7) on a layup with 14:59 remaining in the first half.

The Bearkats led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Michael Holyfield and Darius Gatson each scored eight points and Wesley Fritz scored six. James led the Bearkats with eight rebounds as SHSU out-boarded Dallas Christian 34 to 28.

Sam Houston played without a handful of players due to injury or eligibility. Senior big man Antuan Bootle and junior Aaron Thompson both missed action due to foot injuries. Transfer Steven Werner is sidelined with an injured heel

"We only have two inside guys right now which makes it hard for us to run outr stuff," head coach Jason Hooten said. "When Marcus James or Michael Holyfield go out, we have to put one of our guards at the four."

Reserve players Fritz, Marquel McKinney and Cameron Sadler saw significant playing time.

"You just have to step up and deal with what you've been givel and that's something we're doing considering the circumstances," Tucker said. "Everyone is coming to practice and working their tails off. When their numbers are called, they're ready."

Sam Houston returns to action Thursday night when the Bearkats play host to Paul Quinn College.

Tickets for Bearkat basketball are available online at or at the SHSU athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House at Bowers Stadium. The ticket office is open from 8 a,m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ticket office telephone is (936) 294-1729.
