Sam Houston State University stands No. 2 in the final Sports Network NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision poll of the 2011 season.
The No. 2 finish stands as the Bearkat football program's highest final FCS national poll standing in SHSU's 24 years of competition at the NCAA Division I football level.
The Bearkats, who were predicted to finish fourth in the 2011 Southland Conference race, produced a 14-1 season record -- the most victories ever in one season in 96 years of Sam Houston State football. Those 14 wins included victories over five nationally ranked FCS opponents and one FBS foe (New Mexico).
Sam Houston won the Southland Conference championship with a perfect 7-0 record.
The 2011 Bearkats led the nation in rushing defense, ranked second in scoring defense and turnover margin, third in total defense and fourth in pass efficiency defense and scoring offense.
