Tuesday’s baseball game against Texas A&M features the first ever matchup between the two teams as ranked opponents. It will also be a historic night on the broadcast.

The game will be the 300th live Sam Houston video broadcast by the Bearkat Sports Network. To celebrate the occasion, the game will be streamed for free.

The BSN started streaming live Sam Houston State games on Jan. 8, 2008, a men’s basketball game against Nicholls State. The first game was a single camera feed being streamed through a laptop. In four years since, it has expended to a multi-camera broadcast with graphics, replays and commercials.

“Four years ago we were one of the first schools in the Southland to offer live video streaming of our home sporting events,” said director of athletics Bobby Williams. “That is an area we feel very strongly about and are always looking to expand and improve the product to enhance our fans experience of Bearkat athletics.”

In addition to the 299 previous Sam Houston State games broadcast by BSN, the crew has handled the streaming of three Southland Conference Championship events, the 2008 Southland Baseball Tournament, the 2010 Southland Volleyball Tournament and the 2011 Softball Tournament. They have also assisted with streaming efforts at the Southland Basketball Tournament in Katy.

The Bearkat Sports Network is almost a completely student run production that is overseen by the Sports Information Department. In the last four years, nearly 30 students from the Mass Communication department have worked on the broadcasts.

“We have such a good Mass Communication department on campus, and it is a natural fit with our department,” Williams said. “Students get valuable experience working on live productions. It is exciting to see how far we have come.”

In addition to the Texas A&M game being streamed for free, there is one other change to the broadcast schedule. The Sunday game against Southeastern Louisiana has been added to the schedule.
