Tanglewood resident and Sam Houston State University Alumnae Carolyn Faulk welcomed more than 170 SHSU alumni along with hall of fame special guests Elvin Hayes, Elvin Bethea and Milo Hamilton to a Bearkat Hall of Fame reception on January 29 at the Montebello Highrise in Uptown Houston.

The reception was hosted by Faulk and 40 Houston-area Bearkats in business.  A record $200,000 was raised to benefit the athletic program at Sam Houston.

Athletic director Bobby Williams and President Dana Gibson provided brief comments on the athletic program and the record enrollment at Sam Houston.

Guests were greeted by members of the Sam Houston athletic coaching staff and pictures were taken with Sammy the Bearkat, Sam Houston's mascot. Attendees also enjoyed fellowship with fellow alumni and were entertained by tunes from the SHSU Jazz Ensemble.

Comments were made by Hall of Famers, Hayes, Bethea and Hamilton, about the success of Sam Houston and the excitement of the evening. Elvin Hayes thrived for sixteen seasons in the NBA and was elected to the Naismuth Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990. Elvin Bethea played 16 seasons with the Houston Oilers and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Milo Hamilton served as the voice of the Astros for nearly 30 years. He was inducted in the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2000.

The party room and garden terrace of the exclusive Montebello high rise were draped in vibrant orange as 200 Houston-area alumni from Sam Houston State University gathered together to celebrate and support the university's championship athletic program.

Fellow alumnae Carolyn Faulk, owner of A&C Plastics, Inc., hosted the reception with her "everything's bigger and better in Texas" flare.  Guests were welcomed by university coaching staff and the effervescent Sammy the Bearkat mascot.

The buzz of conversation and energy of the room grew throughout the evening and was reflected in the enthusiastic applause given for Dr. Dana Gibson, SHSU president, and Bobby Williams, university athletic director.

Bethea,  Hayes and Hamilton inspired and energized the crowd of Bearkats with their reflections on sports and the importance of fans and supporters.
