The Sam Houston women's bowling team heads to Bessemer, Ala., this weekend to compete in the Holiday Collegiate Classic.

The tournament will be held at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center.

With only three regular season tournaments left on the Bearkats' schedule, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen is looking for his team to be ready for a final stretch run in the squad's bid for an NCAA Championships berth.

"We've had a successful season so far and put ourselves in a good position going into the final month of the regular season," Hagen said. "Each of our remaining three tournaments feature strong fields with ranked teams. We've still got to take care of business."

No. 4 Arkansas State and No. 5 Vanderbilt will be the Bearkats' top competition in Alabama. Sam Houston State stands No. 8 in the latest NCAA Division I rankings. The SHSU bowlers have defeated Arkansas State in four of the pair's five meetings this year. Vanderbilt holds a 0-2 edge over the Kats.

Sam Houston brings a 72-21 dual match record into the tournament. Sam Houston is 25-15 against teams that have been ranked among the top 20.

The Bearkats have won five tournament titles this year including championships in their last two events.

During the fall semester, the Kats won tournament titles at the Tulane Invitational, the Alabama A&M tournament and the Track Kat Klash in Huntsville. The Bearkats won the Bowie State Intercollegiate and the Southern Invitational this month.

Following the trip to Alabama, Sam Houston State will complete regular season action with tournaments at Kansas City March 1-3 and Smyma, Tennessee Mar 15-17.
