The Sam Houston women (16-12, Southland 12-4) now are only two victories away from securing the program's first conference championship in the university's 26 years in the Southland. A 62-55 victory by Oral Roberts over Lamar late Saturday afternoon gave the Bearkats sole possession of first place.
Four other Bearkat women scored in double figures as Sally Clavelle posted 13 points, Jasmine Johnson 121, Sequeena Thomas 11 and Chanice Smith 10.
Thomas led the Bearkats with 11 boards. She now has posted a school record of 50 games with both double figure points and rebounds in her career including 18 double-doubles this season.
For Martin, Sam Houston's second all-time leading scorer with 1,750 points, the afternoon's performance was her 95th career double figure game.
"We really did a good job of focusing and staying in control this afternoon," Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. "The team is fighting hard and playing together. With two games to go, they control their own destiny."
Sam Houston never trailed, jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes and leading at intermission 43-28. The Kats' largest lead in the first period was by 17 points, 37-20, after a three-point basketball by Chanice Smith 2:23 before halftime.
The Kats' largest margin was a 31-point lead with 2:50 to play.
The Bearkat women close the season with road games at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night and Northwestern State Saturday afternoon. Sam Houston's highest finish in their 26 years in the league has been third place.
Victories in those games not only with clinch a tie for the Southland title but will give the Bearkats a bye into the semifinals of the Southland Conference post-season tournament which begins Wednesday March 13 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy.
