With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Sam Houston women’s tennis team looks to nail down its ninth consecutive Southland Conference post-season berth in a series of four consecutive home league dual matches.

The excitement begins Saturday at 12 noon when the Bearkats play host to Lamar at the McAdams Tennis Center.

Sam Houston has a score to settle with the Cardinals. The Kats have not beaten Lamar in women’s tennis since 2007. Since then, the Cardinals have run off seven consecutive wins over SHSU including a 7-0 loss last year.

There is a log-jam both at the top and the bottom of the Southland Conference standings.

Lamar is one of five teams with only one loss in league action. Sam Houston is one of four teams with only one conference victory.

Southeastern Louisiana leads the Southland with a 5-1 mark. Lamar, Northwestern State and A&M-Corpus Christi all are 4-1. Stephen F. Austin stands 3-1.

Sam Houston and Nicholls are tied for seventh at 1-4. Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts are tied for ninth at 1-5. The top eight regular season finishers qualify for the Southland tournament in Beaumont April 26-28.

Following Saturday’s showdown with Lamar, the Kats play host to sixth place McNeese Sunday at 12 noon. Next Saturday and Sunday, Sam Houston concludes the regular season hosting ORU and Central Arkansas.

Sam Houston’s Maddie Mortimore and Tanya Postnikova own two of the top singles records in league play so far this season. Mortimore is 5-0 against conference foes while Postnikova stands 4-1.
