The Bearkats couldn’t overcome a six run first inning for Oral Roberts as they fell 8-4 in the first game of the three-game series Friday at Don Sanders Stadium. Game two is set for 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Starter Cody Dickson could only record one out in the game as he issued three walks, gave up two hits, and hit a batter. Dickson issued a bases-loaded walk and was replaced by Michael Burchett with the score already 3-0.

Oral Roberts scored another run on a squeeze play and two more on a single up the middle. Burchett pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Freshman relief pitcher Dirk Masters was outstanding in his longest outing of the season. Masters pitched four scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out two.

The Bearkats had opportunities to get back in the game. SHSU scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the seventh. But the Kats left ten runners on base in the game.

Oral Roberts’ starter Alex Gonzalez pitched eight innings allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out eight. Alec Smith pitched the ninth inning in relief to finish off the Kats.

Third baseman Kevin Miller was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Left fielder Luke Plucheck was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
