Sam Houston State shortstop Carter Burgess has been named as a quarterfinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Friday.
Burgess is one of the Bearkats offensive leaders, with a .324 average in 37 games this season. The sophomore is just one of two Kats to have started every game in 2013.
The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.
The Houston, Texas, native is second on the team in hits (48), runs scored (25), and total bases (60). He has committed just six errors with a .960 fielding percentage. He’s also turned 11 double plays this season.
Burgess started the season as the Bearkats second baseman but was forced to move to short after Corey Toups was injured after just two games. He has filled in extremely well.
The SEC leads the nation with five players on the watch list. Other conferences with multiple representatives include the Pac-12 with four, the Big 10 with three and the ACC and Ohio Valley with two each.
"It's no wonder that some of these conferences have multiple players featured on the Wallace Award Watch List," said Tyler Young, award co-chair. "Of course, we're also excited to see a number of other conferences represented as well. This is a great list of players."
"Each of these shortstops have some impressive statistics -- whether it's batting averages or fielding percentages," said Darby Brown, Wallace Award co-chair. "We look forward to seeing what they do during the upcoming weeks.
