Tori Benavidez and Jessica Slater both went 3-for-3 as Sam Houston totaled 13 hits to run-rule Nicholls 11-2 for a Southland Conference softball series sweep Sunday afternoon.

Six of the 13 hits Sunday were doubles, the third highest single game doubles total in Bearkat softball history.

For the series, Sam Houston totaled eight doubles, a triple and three home runs as the Kats kept pace with Southland leaders McNeese State and Northwestern State. SHSU stands 28-19 for the year and 14-7 in league action.

"I saw some people who really took care of business as far as offense this weekend," SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. "They really hit the ball well and I was happy with that."

The top of the first saw Nicholls start just as the Colonels had in both games in Saturday’s doubleheader as they took an early lead on an RBI single by Leah Andrus.

Sam Houston struck back with consecutive hits as Tori Benavidez and Jessica Slater each singled then scored on a double by Kim Damian. Tiffany Castillo homered to right field with two outs to give the Kats a 4-1 lead in the first. The homer was Castillo’s sixth of the season.

Courtney Vanlandingham got one run back for Nicholls with a solo home run in the top of the second.

Benavidez singled with two out in the bottom of the second, stole second and scored on a single by Jessica Slater to give the Kats a 5-2 margin.

Sam Houston exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 11-2. Benavidez and Tiffany Castillo each had two RBIs in the inning while Slater and Shelbi Tucker each added one apiece.

Haley Baros (9-7) picked up her seventh complete game performance of the year in the circle. She struck out three of the 21 batters she faced.

Sam Houston will play host to Texas Southern Wednesday in a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader then meet head-on with Southland leader McNeese in a three game series in Huntsville next Saturday and Sunday.
