Sam Houston’s 1961 Lone Star Conference championship football team held a reunion at Henry Adair’s camp house last week.

Current Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz was a special guest at the event.

The 1961 Kats rolled up a perfect 7-0 league record and finished the season with an 8-1 overall mark. Sam Houston outscored its conference opponents 138-46 on the way to the title.

Highlights of the season included a 9-7 victory over Tangerine Bowl champion Lamar, a 14-0 shutout of East Texas, a 9-7 victory over Southwest Texas and a 41-16 win in the “Battle of the Piney Woods” against Stephen F. Austin.

“It was great to have the opportunity to visit with a bunch of fired-up Bearkats,” Fritz said.
