Five former Sam Houston baseball greats have been named to the Southland Conference’s 1990s All-Decade Team. Brent Bubela, Kelly Eddlemon, Greg Kubes, Stephen Prihoda, and Ron Thames join a total of 56 student-athletes that makeup the 1990s all-decade team.

Eddlemon played third base for the Kats from 1997-2000 and is one of the best offensive players in program history. One of just five Sam Houston players to be Division-I All-Americans, he hit .416 in 1999 and was named as a first teamer.

The former 12th round pick of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays is in the top five in career runs, hits, RBI, doubles, and home runs. Eddlemon hit 26 homers and drove in 95 runs in 1999, both the highest in school history.

Bubela and Thames were a part of the Bearkat team that beat No. 1 ranked Miami in the NCAA Regionals in Austin. Bubela was the Southland’s batting average champion in 1996 and won the league tournament MVP award that season. Thames was the first-team all-conference first baseman in 1996 and 1997.

Pitchers Stephen Prihoda and Greg Kubes just missed playing for the 1996 NCAA Regional team.

Prihoda pitched for the Kats from 1992-1995 and his name appears throughout the record book. He tossed one of the few no-hitters in school history, in a 5-0, 7-inning win over UTSA in 1993.

The 1994 Southland Player of the Year is in the top-10 in career ERA and wins. Prihoda’s 285 career strikeouts are the most in Bearkat history. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round of the 1995 MLB draft.

Kubes tossed two seasons for the Bearkats before being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 14th round of the 1998 MLB draft. The 1997 Pitcher of the Year struck out 78 batters that season, the tenth most by a Kat pitcher. He struck out 12 batters in a game against Nicholls State.

The Southland Conference will continue to recognize all-decade teams in the coming days.
