Sam Houston women’s bowler Neishka Cardona continues to pile up the international honors.

Cardona, who has been a member of all three Bearkat teams since the inaugural season of women’s bowling, was master’s event champion and medaled in four of five events at the Olympic Cup competition in Ponce, Puerto Rico June 7-9.

The tournament was hosted by the Bowling Federation of Puerto Rico.

Along with her master’s gold medal, Cardona took silver in singles, the team event (with Astrid Valiente, Yoselin Leon and Mariangie Colon and bronze in the all-event standings. She finished fifth in the doubles event with Colon.

The tournament began Friday June 7 as 48 athletes (24 men and 24 women) competed in singles. The doubles event was held Saturday June 8. On the tournament’s third day Sunday, the athletes bowled 3 team games on a World Ten Pin Bowling Assoication (WTBA) Short Pattern and then 3 team games on a WTBA Long pattern.

After the team event the top two males and females from each category (youth, adult, and senior) and the other top two bowlers from the all events competed in the master’s event as they then went in to a one game single elimination match play format. Once the finals were set, a two game total pins match decided the overall master winner and championship match.

Cardona defeated Alexa Rodriguez 193 to 163, Grace Rodriguez 169 to 157 and Ali Mediavilla 204 to 164 and 190 to 163 to claim the title.

Cordana next will be competing in Henderson, Nevada for the National Team of Puerto Rico where USA will play host to the World Tenpin Adult Bowling Championships. The event will feature 26 teams from around the world.
