Eight Sam Houston student-athletes have been named to the 2012-13 Academic All-Southland Conference women’s track and field/cross country honor squad.

The eight selections to the Academic All-Southland team for Sam Houston represent the most by any squad in the league.

Nicole Aponte, Haleigh Ceballos, Morgan Davis, Lygia Foreman, Adrienne Qullin, Tonicia Wimberley and Jenny Zoch are the eight honorees for the Bearkats.

Aponte, a sophomore animal science major from Kingwood, has produced a grade point average of 3.82. She placed 16th in 2012 Southland cross country championships (22:28) as Sam Houston finished second in team competition.

Ceballos, who owns a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA as a family and consumer services major, also was a member of Sam Houston’s Southland runner-up cross country team. The sophomore from Sanger posted a 27:16 time at the Southland meet last fall.

Davis has earned back-to-back honors as both the Southland Conference indoor track and field “Student-Athlete of the Year” and the league’s indoor pentathlon champion. Davis owns a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in biology after posting a career 3.63 GPA as an undergrad.

Dooley, a senior kinesiology major from Flower Mound, holds a 3.33 overall GPA. She earned All-Southland honors in both cross country and indoor track, finishing as the runner-up at the league cross country meet in the fall and winning the indoor mile run in February. She also anchored the Bearkats’ Southland indoor distance medley relay.

Foreman, a All-Southland performer in both the 2013 indoor and outdoor meets, is a junior kinesiology major with a 3.28 GPA. She won the indoor 400 meters and anchored the Kats’ gold medal 4x400 relay. At the outdoor meet in May, she ran on the champion 4x400 relay and placed third in the 400 meters.

Quillin, the 2013 Southland Conference outdoor women’s hammer champion, is a junior accounting major with a 3.21 overall GPA. The junior from Klein Forest High School in Houston also placed fourth in the shot put outdoors and finished in the top 10 in both the shot and the weight throw indoors.

Wimberley, a senior from Houston Washington, owns a 3.28 GPA as a kinesiology major. She earned All-Southland honors after running the final leg of the Bearkats’ winning 4x400 relay outdoors and the second leg on the Kats’ championship indoor distance relay quartet.

Zoch, a senior biology major from Giddings, has produced a 3.92 overall GPA during her Bearkat career. She scored in two events at the Southland Conference outdoor championships, taking fourth in the shot put and eighth in the hammer.

The quartet of Academic All-Southland stars helped lead Sam Houston to runner-up finishes in cross country and indoor track and a third place finish in the outdoor competition. The performance helped Sam Houston nail down its first-ever Southland All-Sports Cup championship and the program’s fourth Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup title.
