When All-America running back and Walter Payton award candidate Timothy Flanders scored the first of the Bearkats’ 10 touchdowns in Saturday’s 74-0 victory over Houston Baptist in the 2013 football opener, the senior added another mark of his list of achievements.

The four-yard touchdown run 3:03 deep into the game made Flanders the all-time leader in the Southland Conference for rushing touchdowns.

The score was Flanders’ 53rd rushing TD, moving the Midwest City, Okla., product ahead of Charles McDaniel of Lamar who scored 52 during his career as a Cardinal in 1971-74.

Flanders , who played only a quarter in the first game, totaled 51 yards rushing to move even closer to becoming the all-time rushing leader in Southland history. Flanders has carried 767 times for 4,285 yards to rank as Sam Houston’s all-time rushing leader.

Claude Mathis, who gained 4,694 net yards for Southwest Texas between 1994 and 1997, holds that distinction now.

Flanders needs 73 more yards to pass Henry Field of McNeese (4,358 yards in 1992-95) to move into the second spot in all-time Southland rushing. The Bearkat senior is 409 yards away from passing Mathis.

Flanders now has scored 56 touchdowns (including three on pass receptions). He needs four more scores to pass Brent Grimes of Central Arkansas (59 TDs in 2006-09) to take over as Southland all-time leader in that category as well.

Flanders and team Richard Sincere both ranked among the Bearkats’ top 10 in career all-purpose yardage. Career all-purpose yards is one of the 34 school records held by Flanders (4,851 yards).

With 64 yards rushing and a 22-yard kickoff return Saturday, Sincere has moved into ninth place in Bearkat all-purpose yards with a mark of 2,839.

Sam Houston State travels to College Station to take on No. 6 Texas A&M Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Bearkats return to Huntsville on Sept. 14 to begin a four-game home stand as SHSU hosts Texas Southern, Incarnate Word, Eastern Washington and Lamar.

Season tickets and individual seats for the remaining seven home games at Bowers Stadium plus the 88th “Battle of the Piney Woods” are on sale now online at www.gobearkats.com or at the SHSU athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House in the south end zone of the stadium.

Ticket office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ticket office telephone is (936) 294-1729.
