The Sam Houston State soccer team will first travel to Denton for a Friday night matchup with North Texas before returning to Pritchett Field Sunday against Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m.
North Texas, who is receiving votes this week in the NSCAA Top 25, is 2-2 after losing a pair of games to Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Wake Forest (2-1 OT) and Virginia Tech (4-2).
The Mean Green, like Sam Houston, has a blowout win over Texas Southern this season, 9-1, to go with a 1-0 win over Houston Baptist.
Rachel Holden leads North Texas in scoring with four goals, while teammate Lynda Hercules has two. Karla Pineda is the team’s creative force, tallying three assists and scoring a goal.
The Bearkats are 1-5 all-time against North Texas with the only win coming in overtime in 2010. Kirby Zak scored the goal in the 105th minute on a rain-drenched Pritchett Field.
Sunday’s home game against Prairie View is the Kats last at Pritchett until October 6 against Stephen F. Austin. Sam Houston will play six straight at home in October.
The Panthers are 0-4 with three of the losses coming to Southland teams, Lamar, 3-2, Incarnate Word, 3-1, and Nicholls, 2-1, as well as for SLC member Texas State, 5-0. Celene Batrez is the team’s leading scorer with two goals.
