Sam Houston State stands at No. 5 in both the Sports Network and NCAA Football Coaches FCS rankings after the second week of action for the 2013 season.

North Dakota State, Eastern Washington and Montana State remain first, second and third in the rankings. Towson leap-frogged Sam Houston to move to No. 5 after a victory over Holy Cross.

Sam Houston fell to FBS No. 6 ranked Texas A&M, last year’s Cotton Bowl champions, to drop to No.5.

Two other Southland teams are in the top 25. Central Arkansas is No. 7 in the coaches’ poll and No. 8 in the Sports Network rankings. McNeese State is ranked No. 13 by Sports Network and 18th by the coaches.

Since first cracking the polls on Sept. 9, 2011, Sam Houston State has been ranked among the FCS top 25 for the last 27 weeks of football action. The Bearkats have won back-to-back Southland Conference titles and made consecutive NCAA FCS national finals appearances.

The Bearkats have ranked among the top 10 FCS teams for 23 polls in a row.

Sam Houston begins a four-game home stand Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup with Texas Southern from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Kats will host Incarnate Word on Sept. 21 before the much anticipated rematch with Eastern Washington Saturday Sept. 28.

SHSU and EWU battled to the wire in last year’s NCAA semifinals before the Bearkats earned a second ticket to Frisco for the finals with a 45-42 victory at Cheney, Wa.

Tickets for all Sam Houston State home games at Bowers Stadium plus the 88th “Battle of the Piney Woods” with SFA Nov. 2 at Reliant Stadium are on sale now at the SHSU Athletic Ticket Office and online at www.gobearkats.com .
