For the fourth time in the last nine years, the more than 350 student-athletes at Sam Houston State celebrated a Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup all-sports championship at the annual Bearkat All-Sports Picnic.

The event was held Monday, Sept. 9 at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.

An annual event that kicks off the athletic and academic year for Sam Houston's 17 intercollegiate sports teams, the affair is sponsored by the SHSU Student-Athletic Advisory Committee.

This year's event was special because, during the 2012-13 season, Sam Houston won the Commissioner's Cup All-Sports Trophy, the program's first ever Southland Women's All-Sports Cup and four individual team league titles (volleyball, women's basketball, football and baseball).

Three teams -- football, baseball and women's bowling -- earned berths in the NCAA playoffs.

The emphasis at Monday's celebration was on fun.

Director of Athletics Bobby Williams spoke to the athletes, the members of each of Sam Houston State's 17 sports teams ate barbeque. After eating, the Bearkat athletes gathered in the outfield to try their hands at sports acitivities including volleyball and soccer.

The evening was fun for all as the Bearkat sports family readies for another year for athletic and academic achievement.
