Several Bearkats have their sights set on career milestones this weekend when Sam Houston plays host to Incarnate Word in a 6 p.m. football game at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium Saturday.
Senior running back Timothy Flanders, who already has 31 school records and seven Southland Conference marks to his credit, has one more target in league annals.
Flanders needs 132 yards on the ground to become the Southland’s all-time rushing leader. Claude Mathis who gained 4,694 yards for Southwest Texas in 1994 to 1997, holds that spot now. Flanders’ career total is 4,563.
Wide receiver, return specialist and wild Bearkat back Richard Sincere has several opportunities for career achievements.
The senior all-purpose back is 33 yards receiving away from joining Tony January, Sam Houston’s offensive leader in 1978 to 1982, as the only Bearkat backs to gain 1,000 career yards both rushing and receiving.
Sincere has totaled 1,945 yards rushing and 967 receiving in his four years with Sam Houston.
Sincere also stands 45 yards away from becoming the eighth Sam Houston player to total 3,000 all-purpose yards. His total of rushing, receiving and return yardage stands at 2,955 now. A day with 55 yards rushing will make Sincere the 10th Bearkat back to rush for 2,000 or more yards.
Quarterback Brian Bell needs 487 yards in the next few games to become only the 12th Southland Conference quarterback to throw for 7,000 yards or more in a career. Bell’s total now stands at 6,513 career passing yards.
Cornerback Bookie Sneed, who has eight career interceptions to his credit, also is looking to move up in the Kat record book. His next interception moves him into seventh place all-time. Two interceptions put him in a tie with Charles Boyce (1988-91) with 10 career interceptions.
Once Flanders finishes with Southland Conference rushing records, he begins an assault on the national FCS all-time standings.
Flanders is 437 yards away from becoming only the 22nd back in FCS history to gain 5,000 or more career rushing yards. With three more rushing touchdowns, Flanders becomes the 14th player in FCS history to score 60 or more rushing TDs.
