Paced by a four-under, first round score of 67 by junior Zach Cabra, the Sam Houston men stand in first place in the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Course in Huntsville.

The Bearkats have a 14-stroke lead over second-place Abilene Christian. Oral Roberts is in third, followed by Stephen F. Austin and Tyler Junior College tied for fourth.

“We’re so proud to have our own golf course and to be able to host and showcase the university, Huntsville and this great course,” said Bearkat head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “There are some great teams come here and it’s very excited to be able to host it in our own facility.”

Cabra followed up his stellar first round with a second round 69 and sits in first in the individual medalist standings. He is just one stroke ahead of his teammate Albert Miner.

Miner broke 70 in both of his rounds as well with a 68 in the first round and second-round 69. The senior finished eighth in last year’s event at Raven Nest.

Freshman Klein Klotz is in fourth after firing a pair of 70s. Logan Boatner (71-76) is tied for 21st and Dennis Reiner (77-75) is tied for 33rd.

“The guys are just playing really solid,” said Kieschnick. “I’m so proud that these guys are really learning how to play the game and how to score well and minimize when they’re not playing well. To be able to perform like that is exciting.”

Alisa White sits in fourth place after shooting a 72 in each round, as the Bearkat women sit three strokes behind Lamar for the lead.

Each of the ladies is in the top-15 of the individual medalist standings.

Nicole Budnik is in fifth and her first-round 70 is tied for the low round of the tournament. The sophomore won the event as a freshman last season.

Incarnate Word is seven strokes behind the Bearkats in third while Oral Roberts is third and Stephen F. Austin is sixth.

Paige Nelson (72-76) and Abby Corson (73-75) are tied for 11th. Brooke Fouts is tied for 15th after a 72 in the first round and a second-round 77.

The final 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
