Led by Nicole Budnik’s fourth place finish, the Sam Houston State women’s golf team claimed the team title at the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Course in Huntsville.
The Bearkats had to come from behind to win the tournament. Lamar took a three stroke lead to the final round but the Bearkats managed to overcome it to win by three strokes.
“We’ve seen this coming from the women. They’ve been really close and we told them that,” said Bearkat head golf coach Brandt Kieschnick. “They came from behind to beat a very good Lamar team that had won their last two tournaments. They played a great round and won today.”
All five of the women finished in the top-12. Freshman Paige Nelson continued her strong start to her Bearkat career by finishing sixth. Nelson also finished sixth at Louisiana Monroe in September.
Junior Alisa White and freshman Brooke Fouts finished tied for seventh. Sophomore Abigayle Corson was tied for 12th.
Lamar’s Wendy Chang took home individual medalist honors, beating her teammate Nghi Ngo and UIW’s Flower Castillo by just one stroke. Budnik was just two strokes back of Chang.
It was a tight finish to the event with the top 12 finishers separated by just nine strokes.
Incarnate Word finished in a distant third followed by Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The next tournament for the Bearkats will be the Alabama-Birmingham Fall Beach Bash in Pensacola, Florida, October 28 and 29.
