New Orleans – Angela Beadle scored 15 points to lead Sam Houston in a 78-47 Southland Conference victory over New Orleans.

The junior post player went 5-of-7 from the floor and pulled down eight rebounds. Senior guard Jasmine Johnson also posted double figures with 11 points including 3-of-6 shooting from three point range.

The victory is the third in a row for the Bearkats, upping Sam Houston to 8-9 for the year and 3-3 in Southland action. The margin of victory, 31 points, is the largest for the Kats this season.

New Orleans, 0-17 overall and 0-6 conference play, scored a three-point basket on their first possession to go up 3-0 in the first 30 seconds. Johnson answered the three with one of her own and never looked back as Sam Houston led 32-14 at intermission.

“Overall, our girls played well today,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “When we got the big lead in the first half, we got a little complacent. But we picked up the intensity after halftime. We can’t ever relax if we’re going to keep winning.”

From the 14 minute mark in the first half until after four minutes in the second period, Sam Houston did not allow UNO a field goal. The Kats limited New Orleans to 25.9 percent shooting from the field.

“We played more man defense today and the girls really believed in it,” Nichols said. “This was a nice win.”

Jazmin Wiley, Nyha Carter and Jasmine Robinson each added eight points to the SHSU total. Wiley also pulled down eight rebounds.

The Bearkat women continue their two-week road swing as they travel to Incarnate Word in San Antonio Thursday and Abilene Christian Saturday.

Next home action for the Kats at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum is Thursday, Jan. 30, when Sam Houston plays host to A&M-Corpus Christi.
