Flanders Starts in East-West Game

Timothy Flanders once again brought national recognition to Sam Houston State University with his appearance in the annual East-West Shrine all-star football game Saturday in Saint Petersburg.

The all-time leading rusher and scorer in the history of both the Southland Conference and Sam Houston, Flanders started at fullback in the game.

Flanders rushed for a 16-yard gain to earn a first down on the West’s second series of the game, setting up a field goal. Flanders played in the first and third quarters, carrying the ball five times and grabbing a short pass for another first down.

The game was telecast nationally on the NFL network. The East defeated the West 23-13.

Flanders is the seventh Bearkat to appear in a post-season all-star game.

Dustin Long played in the 2005 East-West Shrine Bowl and the Hula Bowl. Mike Ober (1989), Michael Bankston (1991), Josh McCown (2001) and Rhett Bomar (2009) appeared in the Senior Bowl. D. D. Terry played in the 2010 Texas Versus The Nation Bowl.
