SHSU vs. UIW live streaming at www.csnhouston.com/page/live

The Sam Houston men take on one of the Southland’s top scoring squads Thursday when they travel to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word at the McDermott Center.

UIW is averaging 85.0 points per game, second highest total by any team in the Southland. Incarnate Word stands 14-3 for the year and is 2-2 in league action.

“They’re a good ball club,” SHSU head coach Jason Hooten said. “This trip to San Antonio and Abilene is going to be another challenging road trip for us.”

UIW features two of the league’s top four scorers. Denzel Livingston (18.8 points per game) ranks second in the Southland while Kyle Hittle (17.6) stands fourth.

Sam Houston, now 13-5 for the year, is much improved offensively. The Bearkats, who ended last year’s campaign with a 63.8 team scoring average, are putting 79.6 points per game on the board in 2014.

But the SHSU men sport a more balanced attack. Four Bearkats are averaging in double figures in Southland Conference action with Jabari Peters (14.2 points per game), Paul Baxter (12.8), Kaheem Ransom (12.8) and Michael Holyfield (10.7).

Holyfield is the team’s top rebounder with a 7.5 average in the Kats’ six Southland games this year. Ransom received Southland Conference men’s basketball “Player of the Week” honors after averaging 21 points per game in SHSU’s victories at Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans.

Stephen F. Austin stands atop the league standings with a perfect 5-0 mark. SFA has won 14 games in a row. Sam Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are knotted in second place, both with 5-1 marks.

KSAM-FM 101.7 FM will broadcast the game live in the Walker County area.
