The Sam Houston softball team takes on another national power when Baylor visits the Softball Complex for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
The Bears enter the games with a 23-5 overall record this season including 13 victories in their last 15 games. The Texas Longhorns ended an 11-game Baylor winning streak Saturday in Waco with a 4-1 win.
Sam Houston also will be attempting to bounce back after a loss. The Bearkats dropped an 8-3 decision to Nicholls Sunday after sweeping a doubleheader from the Colonels Saturday by scores of 6-0 and 2-0.
The Kats own a 14-16 overall record and stand 4-5 in Southland Conference action this year.
Baylor features a powerful offensive attack. The Bears are hitting .320 with 29 doubles, three triples and 23 home runs.
Kaitly Thurman leads Baylor with a .456 average. Ari Hawkins hits .371 and Sarati Smith .365.
Heather Stearns, who has earned Big 12 “Pitcher of the Week” honors this year, sports an 0.98 earned run average and a 9-1 record in the circle. Whitney Canion owns a 12-3 mark and 1.56 ERA for Baylor.
Shortstop Tayler Gray and third baseman Tori Koerselman lead Sam Houston with batting averages of .365 and .333, respectively.
Haley Baros, a conference “Pitcher of the Week” honoree this year for the Southland, has pitched the Bearkats to six wins. Shelby Lancaster tossed a no-hitter in last weekend’s series opening win over the Colonels.
The two games against Baylor are part of an eight-game home stand at the Bearkat softball complex.
Sam Houston completes the series of home games with a three-game weekend series against Southland Conference leader Lamar Saturday and Sunday.
The Bearkat softball team will host a free youth clinic on the field following Sunday’s series final against the Cardinals. Youngsters will receive instruction on position play, hitting tactics and base running techniques from both the players and coaches.
